This course will explore the development of Israeli culture in English translation in order to understand the Israeli experience from within. The course will include readings from modern Hebrew literature (short stories, fiction, and non-fiction), Hebrew poetry, Israeli popular music, the history of Israeli cinema, modern Palestinian literature, recent studies of Israeli society, the voices of Jewish settlers in the West Bank (Judea and Samaria), and an exploration of the relationship of American Jews and Israel.
